Here at Gettel Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM, we have a great selection of electric vehicles that are perfect for any lifestyle. There are many benefits to upgrading to an EV, but one of the biggest benefits of owning one is that you no longer have to make frequent trips to the gas station! Instead, you can plug in your vehicle at home or at a public charging station. Thanks to the increasing number of charging stations across the United States, it’s now easier than ever to find a convenient place to recharge your electric vehicle.
To help make the transition to electric vehicle ownership even smoother, we’ve created a guide to EV charging. This guide contains everything you need to know about powering up your car and where to find public charging stations.
What is an EV Charging Station?
EV charging stations are a convenient way to recharge your electric vehicle. They are available in many public locations and can also be installed in private homes or businesses. Some EV charging stations offer free charging, while others require a credit or debit card. Prices and availability vary depending on location, so it’s important to check rates and availability before using a station. Once you’ve paid for the charge, all you need to do is plug your car in and wait!
To make things even easier, electric vehicle drivers can download an EV charging app. An EV charging app makes it easy to locate nearby charging stations and stay connected to your vehicle as it charges, all from your phone. The app should include a map of all the nearby charging locations and provide detailed information on each station, including hours of operation, payment options available and any other features offered at each location.
EV Charging Options
There are three types of electric vehicle charging: Level 1, Level 2 and DC Fast Charging. Knowing the differences between them can help you choose the type that is best suited for your charging needs and lifestyle.
Level 1 Charger
Level 1 charging is the least powerful way to charge your EV. It refers to the process of plugging an electric vehicle into a common residential outlet with a 120-volt AC outlet. Level 1 chargers typically take 40-50+ hours to charge an all-electric vehicle up to 80 percent from its empty state.*
Level 2 Charger
Level 2 chargers are widely available and can be found in both businesses and public areas. You can also have a Level 2 wallbox charger installed at home. This type of charging station can easily be set up by an experienced electrician, and it provides fast and efficient charging. With a Level 2 charger, most EVs can recharge from empty to 80% in four to 10 hours.*
DC Fast Chargers
DC Fast Chargers, also known as Level 3 chargers, are a type of public charging station that can provide high power output. By using a DC Fast Charger, drivers can expect to charge their electric vehicle from empty to 80 percent in roughly 20 minutes or up to one hour. This makes them an efficient and convenient way of quickly topping off the battery on your EV, allowing you to get back on the road faster.*
